Earlier this month we hit the road for Limerick to attend the annual Irish Restaurant Awards. As always we were grateful to be nominated for a number of awards by our customers.
Today the Irish restaurant scene is thriving and attending such evenings opens our eyes to the fantastic standards that have become the norm in our industry. At the same time these events can be daunting as it highlights the stiff competition we as a small business in a rural town face. For this reason we were delighted to be awarded Best Wine Experience (Kerry). This is our third year in a row winning this award! Cliodhna (owner of Sol y Somra) is passionate about wine and this is reflected in the wine list and wine events that are held throughout the year.
The wine list is updated regularly and special wines feature each week which are matched to dishes on the food menu. We offer taster glasses as well as full glasses to encourage customers to experiment with what's pouring. Our wine tasting evenings are a great opportunity for wine enthusiasts and novices alike to taste, talk and learn a little more about varieties, regions and wine styles. More than anything the aim is to take the mystique out of the wine in a fun, informal and sociable atmosphere. The tastings are done in small groups, max 16 people and you can come by yourself or in a group.
Some of the most popular wine tasting themes over the past 12 months included 'Rich and Gutsy Reds', 'Wines for Summer', 'Old World V's New World', 'The Irish Wine Geese', 'Fortified Wines for Winter & Christmas', 'Master the Art of Spitting (an introduction to tasting wine)'.
