Delighted for Alberto Mendoza whowas awarded Best Restaurant Manager in the province of Munster.
“Atmospheric is one of the things they do best in the Foley family and this younger sister restaurant to Nick’s, run by Clíodhna Foley, proves the point.
“Sol y Sombra, therefore, is not just a restaurant for dinner on a Friday evening. It's a restaurant for life, and we applaud Ms Foley's imagination and inventiveness in fashioning a restaurant that is always interacting with its community.
And at the core of it all is the excellent Spanish-accented cooking that will bring you back again and again. All this, and a glass of Lustau East India Solera: ah!”
We also have been mentioned in the Michelin guide in 2018 & 2019. We have received a Tripadvisor certificate of excellence for the last couple of years since they brought in the certificates highlighting excellence collated from customer reviews.
The Restaurant Association of Ireland has also recognised our commitment to high standards of food and service and we have been awarded Best Casual Dining 2012 & 2013 in Kerry and in 2013 also won the Best Casual Dining for the whole of Munster.
"Old church converted into a top end Tapas restaurant. We went early March in dreadful weather. A small town in Kerry. March! The place was packed. The ambiance is lovely. But the food was faultless. We treat ourselves occasionally to food out in the Kerry region. Eaten in all the 5 star hotel restaurants. Seriously this is up and over the best of them. Definitely going back. (March 2019)
"We were taken to Sol y Sombra by locals who highly recommended this tapas bar, situated in an old church. I can see why it is included in The Michelin Guide 2019. The food was fresh and full of great flavours. We can highly recommend the beef stew, squid rings, lamb meatballs, and chicken skewers washed down with the Iron Bridge Ale and King Puck Ale. We were that impressed we went back the following night. Fabulous food, in a great setting, served by wonderful staff." (November 2018)
We had the most fabulous gastronomic experience here last weekend. The menu is innovative made with delicious local produce and served with a spanish twist.
To name a few highlights (although we would gladly eat everything again!) the black pudding, prawns with chili and ox cheek were exceptional. The bar also has an excellent wine list. The restaurant has been tastefully converted from an old church and the gothic windows and original arched ceilings make you feel you really are somewhere special! (October 2017)
"This was our third visit to Sol y Sombra and we all enjoyed another lovely evening!
The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and the food was delicious - we ordered tapas to share and the children enjoyed a chicken meal.
Again, we had a lovely warm welcome from the staff and we look forward to visiting Sol y Sombra next time we are in Ireland! Many thanks!"

“The first time I was ever in this building was about 50 years ago when it was still a church. Now it has been transformed into a beautiful place to eat, drink and relax - and the food and service match the surroundings. On my latest visit I was on my own and a delicious plate of Spanish cold meats with cheese, lovely fresh bread, tasty olive oil for the bread and a crisp fresh glass of manzanilla. Oh yes - I also had a really lovely chicken and almond sauce dish which was just scrumptious. Great place to go - on your own or with a group.”
