Sol y Sombra (meaning Sun and Shade) came about when we set out to find a fitting use for the wonderful old church in the heart of Killorglin. Having visited many bars, restaurants, markets and wineries in many parts of Spain we discovered the diversity of regional tapas and variety of different wine styles both modern and traditional. Most of all we fell in love with the concept of the local tapas bar - the diversity and seasonality of simple yet well prepared food, the informality of the dining experience, the buzz of people coming and going feasting on tasty bite sized snacks and quaffing a variety of different wines by the glass, a place to enjoy conversation and the buzz - we believed that this could work in Ireland.
What is so distinctive about the Spanish approach? For one thing, it is typical to eat something large or small with a drink. There is a good choice of wine by the glass. It is affordable: good fresh ingredients are prepared simply, and served without fuss. A long bar counter where it all happens. Business people, students and tourists are equally welcome and can find something to share. And of course, the atmosphere!
So we have worked hard to create an authentic expression of a Spanish tapas bar in Ireland. The building was completely restored and adapted to restaurant use. Great efforts were made to retain the original character of the building while sourcing new and antique furniture throughout Ireland, the UK and Spain to complement that character. We have a menu created with the best of Irish produce combined with essential imports from Spain, and an extensive, mainly Spanish wine list is in place. Many of our wines we import directly. As in Spain, we have many good value wines which go well with food.
We also have an excellent sound system, and regularly host live music and events. Outside seating is available in the summer on our terrace.
